THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-DRAWN DESIGN
The Hawaiian green sea turtle, or honu, gracefully navigates the ocean currents within a coral reef, surrounded by schools of manini and kole. This species is essential to coral reef health, as its grazing on algae and seagrass prevents overgrowth and supports ecosystem diversity. Although honu have faced threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and past overharvesting, ongoing conservation and legal protections have fostered population recovery. The honu continues to play a vital ecological role in Hawai‘i’s marine habitats while remaining deeply intertwined with the islands’ cultural heritage.
