Pakuikui Aloha Shirt by David Shepard
THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-DRAWN DESIGN
Playful, bright, and devoted, the pāku‘iku‘i fish—also called the Achilles Tang—is recognized by its distinctive orange spot. Native to Hawaiian and Western Pacific reefs, this surgeonfish is monogamous and often spotted in pairs. Essential to coral reef health, it grazes on algae that could otherwise damage the ecosystem. Preferring shallow, fast-moving waters, the pāku‘iku‘i skillfully maneuvers through bubbling waves. Unfortunately, its numbers have been dropping for decades, especially in West Hawai‘i, due to overfishing and aquarium collection. Protecting this unique fish supports the balance of our fragile reef environments.
