In Polynesia and Oceania, canoes have served as crucial modes of transportation between islands and as vital tools for fishing along the coast. Some were even specially designed for warfare, with varying sizes and materials used based on the resources found on each island. For example, Hawaii utilized the strong Koa tree to build large war and voyaging canoes, while the Māori in New Zealand crafted massive "Waka Taua" canoes, up to 130 feet in length, from Kauri or Totara trees. Although most canoes were dugouts, some, such as in Samoa, were constructed with planks.
