Manu-o-ku & Hau Tree Blue Aloha Shirt by David Shepard
THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-DRAWN DESIGN
In Hawai’i's past and future, the majestic Manu-o-kū birds make their home among the vibrant Hawaiian hau trees. These resilient birds, also known as the white tern, hold cultural and ecological significance, serving as a symbol of land to seafarers and skillfully fishing out at sea. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts and the Hawaiian cultural renaissance, the Manu-o-kū has made a comeback in urban Honolulu, with measures in place to protect the hau trees they nest in. These trees, with their fleeting but beautiful flowers, are marked with blue ribbons to ensure the safety of the Manu-o-kū and their home.
