Io and Ilianhi Tan Aloha Shirt by David Shepard
THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-D
RAWN DESIGN
The Hawaiian Hawk, known as 'Io, holds deep cultural and ecological importance in Hawai’i, symbolizing ali'i (Hawaiian royalty) with its power, strength, and nobility. Celebrated in legends as a guardian spirit and messenger, the 'Io also plays a vital role as an apex predator, helping maintain ecosystem balance by controlling smaller and invasive species. Once widespread across the islands, the ‘io now resides only on Hawai'i Island, sharing its habitat with the endangered 'iliahi (sandalwood tree). Both species carry rich histories that highlight the urgent need to protect Hawai’i’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
