Puakala Blue on White Aloha Shirt by David Shepard
THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-D
RAWN DESIGN
Inspired by the vibrant native Hawaiian plants clinging to the black lava rocks of Kalaupapa peninsula on Moloka‘i, this design captures a unique blend of natural beauty and resilient spirit. After graduating from UH Manoa, the artist embraced the chance to oversee a native plant nursery for the National Park Service in Kalaupapa, forever moved by the remote town’s stunning scenery and its brave community. This shirt honors both the striking landscape and the profound history of endurance and care found here. Featuring the bold white Puakala poppy, a hardy flower thriving amid volcanic winds and sea spray, it symbolizes strength and beauty born from contrast.
