Kalo Aloha Shirt by David Shepard
THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-DRAWN DESIGN
Olelo No'eau: 'The land is the chief, man the servant.' This shirt celebrates the lo'i kalo—the lifeblood of Hawaiian culture and sustenance. The hand-drawn design honors these sacred wetland farms where kalo (taro) grows in harmony with water, wildlife, and the land itself. Kalo, known as Haloa, is the revered ancestor of the Hawaiian people, deserving our respect and stewardship. Every detail matters in a lo'i kalo system. Water flows through auwai channels, nourishing the soil, feeding fish and native birds like the Aeo (Hawaiian stilt), and cleansing itself as it returns to the sea. This artwork captures that sacred cycle—wai as both wealth and life force, rippling through every layer of existence. Wear this design as a reminder of where we come from and where we're headed. It's a call to live in harmony with the land, protect our waters, and honor the connection between all living things. Where there is water, there is life—and this shirt carries that truth with every wear.
